We need a modernized terminal for Providenciales

Patching up the old airport does not address long term needs.

Introduction

Tourism is the lifeblood of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Therefore, we should not take tourism for granted as tourists do not have to come here because they have many choices. However, I appreciate the fact that so many of them have chosen the Turks and Caicos as their choice of destination.  We must do our best to retain and grow this industry and one way to do so is by having a modern airport.

There were plans to construct a 270,000 sq ft state-of-the-art passenger terminal. The terminal would include four jet bridges and was expected to take three years to complete. There are rumours that the proposed $450 million terminal is no longer part of the Government’s agenda and that the Government will be patching up the old airport. The Government is yet to inform the people of the status of the new airport and makes you wonder if the rumours are indeed true.

History of the Project

It was in May 2022, when the Government through the Airports Authority engaged the services of ALG Consulting to prepare the business case and tender documents for the new airport.  A year later in May 2023, the UK approved the redevelopment of a terminal building through a Private Public Partnership. In August 2023, we were informed that five international consortiums were shortlisted for the project. It is my understanding that the bids were submitted in December 2024.

Questions for the Government

Will the Government please inform the people of the Turks and Caicos why it is taking so long to select a bidder for the new airport?

Is it true that we will no longer get a new airport?

Why the change in plans? Is procurement an issue?

Why has the Government not released more information about the airport project?

If the rumours are true, who is going to be held accountable for the money that we have already spent on the consultancy fees etc?

Is it true that the preferred bidder was eliminated from the process due to some technicality and hence the project is not going ahead?

If the rumours are true, and should we decide two years from now, we need a new airport again, does this mean we have to start the process all over again?

Why we need a new airport

Although repairing the current airport infrastructure may be essential to satisfy immediate requirements, it does not provide a solution for long-term needs.  We really need a new airport. A modern airport would significantly enhance first impressions and help maintain our competitiveness with other premier luxury destinations.  First impressions are lasting impressions. Many tourists have stated that they will not return to TCI because of their experience at the airport.

The existing airport is currently exceeding its operational capacity, particularly during weekends and the peak season. Long lines and occasional flight diversions are embarrassing.   Let’s face it, the cramped terminal and the long lines are not what tourists should have to incur from a luxury destination. The proposed new airport is anticipated to accommodate increased air traffic, minimise delays, and facilitate long-term growth.

Conclusion

If the Government keeps pouring money into temporary fixes, it may end up spending more in the long run without truly solving the problem. A modern terminal can help facilitate efficient arrivals and departures.

I challenge the Government to be transparent and honest with the people about the status of the airport project. I just cannot comprehend why one or two individuals are making a decision about the airport without consulting and informing the people.

We need a new airport. Patching up the old airport is like putting a bandage on a broken leg. It has been more than three years now since serious discussions about a new terminal for Providenciales. How much longer must we wait?  The construction of a new terminal should have already begun.
