Count Your Blessings
Introduction
Happy Thanksgiving! Although the Turks and Caicos is embracing a tradition that is rooted in United States and therefore does not carry the same historic origins, we should use this time as an opportunity to count our blessings. Too many of us spend more time complaining about what we don’t have but quite frankly if we were to count our blessings, we have so much more than we realize. Therefore, taking time to acknowledge your blessings might just be the reset for our hearts, homes and communities.
While everyone will eventually face death, the fact that you are alive is a blessing. I know there are so many issues in this world and being dead you will not have to face these issues. However, some people die without knowing God and let alone not carrying out their purpose. Therefore, life offers the chance to know God, grow, learn, begin anew, pursue your passion, and repair what’s been broken. Life is fragile, and the fact that you are here—breathing, moving, learning, growing—is something to give thanks for.
Your family
In a world of millions, the truth is that life can still feel lonely and overwhelmingly stressful. Crowds don’t guarantee connection, and noise doesn’t guarantee comfort. Many people move through their days surrounded by others yet still feel unseen or unsupported. But having a family—whether by blood, by friendship, or by choice—changes that. Family gives you a place where you belong, a circle of people who care, encourage, correct, and love you. Your family is a reminder that you are not walking your journey alone. If you still have family to call, share a meal with, or laugh alongside, then you are already rich in ways that truly matter.
Your faculties in place
You can think clearly. You can move, speak, reason, and choose. You can plan, dream, and act. These abilities—so easy to take for granted—are the very tools that give you freedom, independence, and possibility. There are many who face life without these abilities yet still push forward with courage. If you have your faculties, you carry a blessing beyond price.
Your place in your life
You might not like your current situation or your place of residence. Even if you’re in a job or country you dislike, be thankful—it’s part of your journey. Even if you don’t enjoy your job, it can still offer financial support, security, valuable experience, and opportunities that help you advance in your career. A place you may not love can still offer safety, opportunity, and lessons you’ll carry for a lifetime.
Conclusion
When we take the time to recognize the blessings God has placed in our lives, I think our perspective would change. Family, life, health, and the ability to live with purpose are gifts that come from His hand. As we celebrate this Thanksgiving let us proceed with an attitude of gratitude. When you choose gratitude, you’ll discover that your blessings have always been greater than your burdens—waiting only for you to notice.
