Do Not Compare Yourself to Others. Be Happy with Yourself

Don’t compare yourself with others. Just look at your own work to see if you have done anything to be proud of. You must each accept the responsibilities that are yours. Galatians 6:4-6

20 Don’t ask that. You are only human and have no right to question God. A clay jar does not question the one who made it. It does not say, “Why did you make me like this?” Romans 9:20

We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend them. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. 2 Corinthians 10:12

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful. I know that full well. Psalms 139:14

Introduction

I published an article a few months ago called “No one is better than you and you are not better than anyone”. In that article, I revealed how I suffered from inferiority complex most of my life due to insecurity.  I was not happy with myself because of my physical appearance and being from a low income family.  I compared myself to others thinking that other people were better than me and my family.  This drove me to low self-esteem and I had no confidence in myself. In fact, I did not want to see anyone and I did not want anyone to see me so I kept myself in my small little corner. I did not know that I was special and unique until I became an adult.

Therefore this article is to encourage you to be happy with the way you are and stop comparing yourself to others. The Bible clearly tells us to detest from comparing ourselves to others as it is unwise.

Be Happy with Your Personality

I know sometimes we look at others and we wish we can have their personality. We even try to act like some people but quite frankly it does not work. I do not think that the personality of an individual can change easily or as a matter of fact can ever change. You can perhaps change some habits but not your personality. For example I am always smiling, cracking jokes and walking fast. I tried to walk slowly and have a serious and bold look on my face but I could not maintain it because it is not part of my personality. Be Happy with You. Do not question why God made you like this. Use your personality to make room for the cultivation of your talents.

Be Happy with Your Talents

I wrote in another article that everyone has at least one talent. I stated that God provided us with inherent talents and so our talents are within us. We just need to find them and cultivate them. We preoccupy ourselves too much trying to acquire other people talents when these are not our gifts. There are some people who are gifted with dancing and singing abilities. I remembered in college, I wanted to dance so badly like the African American dancers but I could not do it.  I tried so hard. I even had a friend in college teaching me how to dance like them but I couldn’t do it. After 30 years, I finally accepted the fact that I cannot dance like them.

Many of you are still wondering what your talents are and so you are pursuing a career based on money, title and status. Be you and pursue what you enjoy and are passionate about. It is ok if you want to be a photographer and not a lawyer. It is ok if you want to be a farmer and not a doctor. Just like every part of your body plays a very important role, every career path plays a very important role in a country.

It took me 48 years to discover one of my talents. I am so excited and happy that I have found this talent not only because it brings me joy and passion but it also inspires others. Discover your passion. Be Happy with it. Do not try to copy someone else talent, It may work for a while but it will not last because you will not be happy. Once you invest in your talents, eventually your talents will reap rewards and benefits.

Love Yourself.

Some of you do not like the size of some of your body parts such as your head or nose. Some males wish they were taller so they can increase their chances on the NBA. Some ladies are not pleased with the size of their breasts and buttocks and so they augment them by means of implants. Some of you are bleaching your skin to look lighter and some of you are tanning to look darker. Love your colour and stop risking your health to change your colour. Some of you see other people and wish you look like them. Love yourself for who you are. You are who you are. There is no perfect person on earth. I believe everyone has something that they do not like about themselves.

The second commandment in the New Testament is to love your neighbor as yourself. This statement clearly expects us to love ourselves. Many of us do not love ourselves but yet we want others to love us and for us to love others. How can you?

The Bible tells us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made and we are made in the image of God. Therefore stop taking these risks by having these implants and plastic surgeries. You cannot expect to look the same for the duration of your life on earth.

Conclusion

I believe that no two people are alike even though two people may have similar behaviours. Therefore do not compare yourself to others. You cannot be like someone else. Otherwise you will not be yourself.  Be Happy with your personality. Be Happy with your Talents. Be Happy for You. Love yourself. You are a special gift from God.
