Introduction
I know we are going through so much especially in light of COVID 19 that we may be focusing on all the things and opportunities we have lost or do not have during this time. However, we have not lost everything even though it may feel so. There are so many blessings that we have in our lives that we have overlooked or have taken for granted that money cannot buy. I am not talking about blessings such as a house, a car and a job. I am talking about other blessings which we will discussed later in this article. As you ponder on your life, remember there may be others who are in a worst situation than you. That in itself is a blessing.
With that said, I want us to remember the words of the song “Count your many blessings” by Jonathan Oatman Jr.
Count Your Blessings
“When upon life’s
billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Refrain:
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
*Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
[*And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.]
Are
you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
When
you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings—*money cannot buy [*wealth can never buy]
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
So,
amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.”
Blessings we take for granted
The Lord
As children of God, we take the benefits of the Lord for granted. Psalms 103:2 states that “Praise the Lord, my soul and forget not all his benefits” Some of these benefits include forgiving our sins, healing our diseases, crowing your life with love and compassion, satisfying your desires, and supplying your needs. He chose us and knew us before we were formed in our mother’s womb. He allows us to be at peace despite our struggles. He has given us a sound mind. He protects us from dangers. He will never leave us nor forsake us.
Family
You may have a rough day at work, people may be attacking you and spreading all sorts of evil against you but when you come home to your spouse and your children, they lighten your day with their support, love and laughs. Family is a blessing. Your children will one day grow up and be there for you. My mom had five children. She was a blessing to us when we were young but we were a blessing to her when she became old.
Life
Many of us take our very own life for granted. Even if we were to die physically, we will have eternal life. Each day we wake up, it is a blessing and another opportunity to give our lives to the Lord if we have not done so as yet.
Our senses
We take our five senses for granted, smelling, hearing, seeing, touching and tasting. Even though some of are experiencing a setback now, we still have our five senses intact. Do not take these senses for granted.
Conclusion
While many of us measure our blessings mostly by money, we can conclude that while money does answereth things, there are so many other blessings in our lives that we overlooked and these blessings are blessings that money cannot buy.
Stop taking each day for granted and count your other blessings on a daily basis.
