Politics is not about everything.
Introduction
There may be an argument that everything is political. However, everything is not political. We may everything political until being political appears to be part of our culture.
The other day a young man mentioned to me that one day he wants to go into politics so that he can help the young people. You do not have to go into politics to help the young people. You can do something now in your community to help the young people.
I may be biased, but I think politics is destroying us more than it is helping us. Some of us believe that politics is about everything, but it is not.
The politicians are policy matters
Politicians are policy makers. Sometimes we act like the politicians must be doing everything. That is not how it works. Each Government department has a head who is responsible for the management of that department. These Department heads do not even report to the elected officials. However, they are responsible for carrying out the policies that the politicians make. With that said politicians must be very careful about what they promised the electorate. I encourage those individuals who have not yet been in politics to understand how it works before you make a commitment to the people. The thing is everything looks so simple on the outside but when you get on in the inside, you will discover that is not how government works.
Your success should not be because of politics
Some people have become successful because of politics via government contracts. However, overall, most successful people are not successful because of politics. They are successful because they worked hard, they market themselves and their businesses effectively and they have developed a great network. Stop thinking that your success depends on your political party. The truth is some of these politicians cannot help themselves. Yes, they can pass legislation, but the legislation must be enforced.
I think of many successful people in this country who had no ties to politics. In fact, those that are successful try to stay from away politics.
Your purpose for your existence maters more than politics
I encourage you to find out what is your purpose. Your purpose is more important than politics. Mind you there are some people whose journey will take into politics but not everyone has to go into politics. There are roles for different people. Find your role and do not let politics interfere with it unless you plan to become a politician.
Your family should matter more than politics
Families are being destroyed because of politics. Yes, you have a right to your political affiliation but do not let it destroy your relationship with your family. Your family will always be your family but some of those people you are supporting will not always be affiliated with that political party.
Your relationship with God should matter more than politics
I watched the Democratic Convention last week and while the delivery of most of the speeches were eloquent, the content of many of the speeches is contrary to the word of God yet many Christians are endorsing the Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
In the Turks and Caicos, our love for politics has reached the point where there are some pastors who are leaving (or staying in) the pulpit to go into politics because they believe they can get more done by pledging allegiance to the King of England than to the God.
Your country matters more than politics
There is so much more we can accomplish as a country if we only put our country first. Somehow, we are putting our political parties first. Quite frankly there is no philosophical difference between them at least not in Turks and Caicos. I do believe there are significant differences between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party in the USA though.
Why can’t we get along and work together as people? Why are we letting politics separate us. It is obvious that some of us are opportunists, and I don’t just mean the politicians, I also mean the electorate. Some people are in it just for what they can get even if it hurts the country.
Conclusion
I think we need to become politically mature and be independent voters rather than committing to a political party. I also think that more of us need to become entrepreneurs. We also need to understand the role of Government. We also need to be more involved in the community. More importantly, I think we need to realize the answer to our problems is not politics but the Lord. You do not have to go into politics to fix the issues. Fix the now and if some of you decide to go into politics, the only thing left to do is the legislative side.
