Introduction
If you do something wrong, you are guilty and you should feel guilty. However, if you did not do anything wrong, there is no need to feel guilty. There are some negative events that occurred and you believed that had you done something differently, those circumstances would not have happened and so you feel guilty about the outcome. Those were unforeseen circumstances and so you should not feel guilty about them because you did not know. Even if you did know, there is no need to feel guilty because you did not do anything wrong. Furthermore, you cannot go back in time and change the circumstances.
There are even some individuals who accuse you of doing something that you did not do but somehow you feel guilty about the accusations even though you know they are inaccurate.
This article is to encourage you to stop feeling guilty about something you did not do. You may then ask what you should do to stop feeling guilty.
Stay blaming yourself
If you know that you did not do anything wrong, you need to reach a point in your life where you have to stop blaming yourself for things beyond your control. Imagine you getting rape and then afterwards you feel guilty because someone made you feel that you were responsible for that heinous act. No one deserves to be raped and the victim should not feel guilty about that at all. Let us look at another scenario, you know you did all you can in raising your children properly but somehow, when they became adults, they lived differently from how you raise them. If you believe you did your best in raising your children, stop blaming yourself.
Be at peace and recognize you did nothing wrong so stop blaming yourself as it will not resolve anything. Obviously if you did something wrong, you should take the responsibility but do not take responsibility for something you did not do.
Confide in someone
If you really feel guilty about something, talk to someone that you trust about the situation. Don’t keep things to yourself. Of course if you believe in God, talk to God. I am telling you, you will feel much better.
Talk to the accusers
I know you do not need to fend and prove anything to anyone especially if you know you did not do anything wrong. However, in order to stop feeling guilty, sometimes it requires you to have a candid conversation with the accusers about the events. Ironically, the accusers may be the ones that are guilty and perhaps they are projecting their guilt on other people to conceal their own responsibilities. Some accusers may have also accused you based on inaccurate information. Hopefully talking to them will bring some light to the situation and maybe some of them will apologize. Of course, there will be some that do not apologize despite hearing the truth but the fact that you talk to them will help you to stop feeling guilty.
Self-reflection
Take some time and reflect on the situations and recognize that no matter what you do or didn’t do, those circumstances would have happened anyway.
Stay Focused
Many things in life are distractions. What people say about you is a distraction. Focusing on the past is a distraction. Trying to please people is a distraction. You got to stay focused on your goals in life and don’t allow the distractions to make you feel guilty. You know you did not do anything wrong so stop feeling guilty.
Conclusion
Sometimes it is natural to feel guilty about something you did not do. However, because you feel guilty about something does not mean it is right. It is wrong to feel guilty about something you did not do. Therefore, take a different perspective in life and stop bothering about something or the behaviours of individuals that you are not responsible for.
