No need to put the Attorney General in the court of public opinions

Let the court do its job

Introduction

Mrs. Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles, our very own is the Attorney General for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Therefore, she is the legal advisor to the Government and must be objective no matter which political party is in power. She too must uphold the rule of law in the Turks and Caicos. Her role often subjects her to public scrutiny and personal attacks.

Several election petitions are being presented to the courts and unfortunately as a result, several personal attacks are being lambasted at the AG. There is also a billboard displaying her picture accompanied by a quotation from her.

We need to rely on and trust the judicial system to examine the evidence with impartiality and then make a fair judgement.  There is no need to resort to personal attacks. Be very careful about how you treat people. Mrs. Knowles will not be in that position forever. Someone else will and that person may be someone that is very close to you. What will you do then? What will you say then?

No need for personal attacks

We may or may not agree with the AG’s legal decision or her involvement in the election petitions but launching personal attacks against her is unethical and dangerous. People have feelings. They have a family, a spouse and children. How do you think they feel? How would you feel if it were you?  Mrs. Knowles has a very stressful job. Do not add any more stress to her by attacking her personally and judging her competency level.

Why do you have to use social media and the court of public opinions to tarnish the reputation of someone? Let the court decide, and once it does, it is out of our hands. It seems to me that some individuals are trying to influence the outcome or mislead the public.

Respect is due to a dog so let us be respectful to our Attorney General. Show some level of maturity. The court system is always available. Let your lawyers present their evidence to the judge or you do it yourself.

The personal attacks will not help the court case as the judge will look at the credibility of the evidence.  Furthermore, the personal attacks will not cause us to lose her job.

Conclusion

It is very shameful and disheartening that the level some people have stoop to assassinate the characters of individuals. I must speak out against the personal attacks on our Attorney General. It is wrong what is being done. We are a small community where everybody basically knows everybody and almost everybody is somehow related to one another.

This is not the kind of culture we want to create. It’s essential to voice our differences, especially against injustices. However, if there is a court proceeding, let the court deal with it. Handling it through the court shows maturity. Let us stop making things personal and political. Enough of the personal attacks.
