Homes for our people – a great start

Introduction

I welcome the news of the most recent housing initiative, and I wish to commend the local developers, Hon. Douglas Parnell, Waterloo Investments, and British Caribbean Bank for collaborating on this important project.

As with any major development, there will be critics. Not everyone will be satisfied, and no project will ever be perfect. However, this initiative represents a positive step in the right direction. Projects like this should be encouraged and supported. Personally, I prefer multi-storey developments rather than individual homes, as they often allow more efficient use of land and greater affordability.

The Housing Crisis

The reality is that we are facing a serious housing crisis. The demand for homes and apartments far exceeds the available supply, and housing prices have become increasingly unaffordable for many residents.

In 2023, the Minister of Housing announced that, based on the National Physical Development Plan, the country would need approximately 13,000 homes over the next two decades, equating to about 650 homes per year for the next 20 years. To date, we have yet to see the construction of any major housing developments that meaningfully address this demand.

This current initiative proposes 480 housing units, comprising:

  • 120 one-bedroom units
  • 240 two-bedroom units
  • 120 three-bedroom units

Even when this project is completed, we will still face a significant housing shortage. This underscores just how critical initiatives like this truly are.

Let Us Embrace the Developers

Rather than focusing on complaints and perceived shortcomings, we should be encouraging these investors to move forward. We should also motivate Turks and Caicos Islanders, especially our young people to take advantage of opportunities to purchase homes within this development. The demand clearly exists.

Every day, social media is filled with complaints about the lack of available homes or apartments and when you do find housing accommodation, the cost is very high. Imagine paying rent for years with nothing to show for it, so when homeownership offers the opportunity to build equity and long-term financial stability, embrace it.

Furthermore, I want to encourage us at least wait until the developers release the pricing before jumping to conclusions.

Conclusion

We must do better as a community and support one another. Across the islands, we see the growth of shanty towns and incomplete housing structures. This development offers a valuable opportunity to provide quality, properly planned housing for the people of Turks and Caicos.

Supporting initiatives like this is not just about development, it is about creating sustainable, dignified living conditions and securing a better future for our country.
