Introduction
The death of anyone is sad no matter the circumstances. However, when someone is killed, it is even worst. The assassination of President Jovenel Moise is very cruel and nonsensical. It will not solve anything but make matters more complicated. The killing of the President will not end the issues in Haiti. I am delighted and thankful that they were able to capture the suspects but of course, the President remains dead.
His death will not only impact Haiti but the entire world particularly the Turks and Caicos Islands which is one of the closest islands to Haiti. Furthermore, it is estimated that at least one third (1/3) of the population of Turks and Caicos is of Haitian descent.
The world will be impacted because I believe more Haitians will be afraid to live in Haiti and will want to escape. Due to Haiti being classified as one of the poorest countries in the world, many people leave for a better living but now with the death of the President, people will want to leave for safety reasons.
The Impact
The population of Haiti is currently estimated to be 9 million people. In addition, it is believed that about 1 to 2 million Haitians are living outside of Haiti. This brutal killing will force more people to leave Haiti because if people can kill the leader of the country without any remorse, they also kill the citizens. I know some may argue that the citizens cannot make decisions like the President can make. However, we do not the mindset of these murderers and they may take revenge in going after the citizens.
The other impact is that outsiders and potential investors will also may not want to travel to Haiti and this will cause an impact on the economy of Haiti. Haiti obviously is not surviving on its own and will need the support of international travelers and traders.
This killing also questions the security and protection of the Haiti. Apparently some of these murderers were in the country for months prior to the assassination. They were able to bypass the security officers and killed the President.
The Solutions
For years, Haiti has been having issues and I believe many people prior to President Jovenel has tried to implement solutions for a better Haiti, however, nothing seems to work. That does not mean that the people of Haiti just give up and accept violence as the answer for violence is not the answer. I do not know what the solution is for Haiti but I have some possible solutions for Turks and Caicos and other countries outside of Haiti.
As much as I am saddened by the situation in Haiti, the Turks and Caicos and other countries must not be lenient and let our guards down. We must ensure that our borders are protected and strengthened so that migrants from Haiti cannot easily enter the Turks and Caicos Islands. You see once people enter the country, they can apply for refugee status similar to what the Sri Lankans have done in the Turks and Caicos. I do not know how it works but it looks like applying for refugee status is in their favour. Therefore the solution is to intercept or deter individuals from entering the waters of the Turks and Caicos. This will require a lot of resources and money however, it can be done.
Conclusion
The way the President was assassinated should be an eye opener for all of us. Here you are the President of a country with supposedly high security but yet murderers were able to intrude his private home and shot him and his wife. We have people living among us and we don’t know who they are. They may be following every move you make and even become your friends so that they can get close to you to kill you. While killing will eliminate someone, it does not eliminate the problems that the world face. In fact, it creates more chaos. Any citizen that loves his or country should not seek to kill the leaders of their country. This is wrong and should not be supported.
