When you don’t know what you want

Introduction

There are some people who know precisely what they want in life and there are many others who really do not know what they want. There are also some people who thought they knew what they wanted and later realize the thing they thought they wanted to do is not want they want to do. You may feel discouraged or demotivated because you do not know what you want while you see others pursuing and achieving their goals.

The thing is you do not need to observe what others are doing. You need to focus on you and you need to know that it is fine to feel the way you are. The truth is a lot of us do not know what we really want. There are many people pretending to know what they want.

I thought I wanted to be an accountant because it was my favourite class in High School. I have a degree in accounting and I have an accounting firm but that is not what I really want to do anymore. I believe I am very good in what I do but it is not what I want to do. About three years ago at age 48, I discovered what I really wanted to do.

This article is to help you discover what you want but if you still cannot discover it now, rest assured it is ok.

Accept who you are

One of the major issues we have in life is that we compare ourselves to others and we imitate what others are doing but it is not really what we want to do. Each of us is unique therefore accept who you are and do not try to change your personality, your features or your career to become like someone else.

If you know who you are as an individual and accept who you are, then you will know what you want because within you are some inherent gifts and abilities that will make you progress to the individual that you were designed for.

You may ask how do I know my gifts and abilities. When you are natural in doing something, that is the start of knowing who you are.

Focus on what you have

I believe that God has given us everything we need. Therefore, take a day off and spend time reflecting on what you have in your possession. Don’t focus on what you don’t have. Whatever you have in your possession, try to see what you can do with it.  Practice with what you have. Start with what you have. Do something with what you have. Moses just had a staff in his hand but it was used to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. The widow was able to pay off debt with the use of jars. David was able to defeat Goliath with a staff, five stones and a sling.

It is ok if you fail

Some of you will experience so many failures in life and as a result you may want to give up and feel like you don’t know what you want. It is ok if you fail. Sometimes those failures are the ways to get you to your destination.

Don’t run away

Sometimes we run away from things that appear so hard. However, no matter how many times you run away, you cannot run away from yourself because when you look in the mirror each day, all you will see is you. I remembered I used to run away from writing. I avoided all of the subjects in Secondary School and University that required a lot of writing. I had no confidence in my ability to write. I just didn’t think I knew what to say or write. Now today, writing is my therapy. It is my favourite thing. You see if you keep running away, then perhaps you may not know what you want because the thing you should be doing, you are running away from it.

Conclusion

You may be an older person and feel that you have wasted your time on earth because you don’t know what you want. You may be someone who has been married multiple times and you feel like a failure. You may be college student and you still do not know what you want to major in.

No matter who you are and no matter how old you are, do not feel bad if you do not know what you want because it is never too late to get what you want.
